
Artificial intelligence is not introducing misinformation into an otherwise healthy ecosystem. It is accelerating and refining dynamics that already exist. Long before generative AI entered the picture, social media had become a highly efficient vessel for distorted narratives, conspiracy, and propaganda. State actors, including the Russian Federation, have repeatedly demonstrated how these platforms can be exploited to influence public opinion and even electoral outcomes at scale.
What generative AI adds is not malice, but precision. High-fidelity synthetic media does not merely misinform, it feels real. And that distinction matters.
A recent article in The Cool Down highlights this risk through an unexpected lens: wildlife conservation media. Researchers warn that AI-generated images and videos of animals, often emotionally resonant and hyper-realistic, can distort public understanding of the natural world rather than deepen it (Everly, 2025).
At first glance, this might appear to be a niche environmental concern. It is not.
This is not fundamentally a wildlife problem. It is a truth, trust, and epistemic ethics problem.
Synthetic Realism and the Collapse of Discernment
At the center of the issue is synthetic realism. When AI-generated imagery becomes sufficiently convincing, audiences lose their ability to reliably distinguish lived reality from generated narrative. What once required scrutiny is now processed instinctively, emotionally, and without friction.
This matters because credibility has always functioned as a form of social infrastructure. When that infrastructure erodes, when images and performances can no longer be trusted as reflections of reality, shared understanding begins to fracture.
Closely related is moral outsourcing. Viewers may experience emotional affirmation, such as “I care about animals,” “I value art,” or “I’m informed,” without grounding those feelings in accurate knowledge, responsible judgment, or real-world engagement. Concern becomes symbolic rather than substantive.
Children represent a particularly high-risk population in this environment. The Cool Down article notes that younger audiences are especially susceptible to treating AI-generated wildlife imagery as factual, internalizing unrealistic expectations about animal behavior and human-nature relationships (Everly, 2025).
From Wildlife to Hollywood: The Same Ethical Thread
A parallel ethical concern is now unfolding in a very different domain: entertainment.
In October 2025, Northeastern University reported on the backlash surrounding “Tilly Norwood,” a fully AI-generated actress promoted as a potential alternative to human performers (Northeastern University, 2025). While proponents frame such creations as tools for innovation, critics, particularly within the acting community, warn that synthetic performers threaten livelihoods, appropriate creative labor, and devalue the lived experience that has historically defined acting as a craft.
Though the context differs, the ethical structure is the same.
Just as AI-generated wildlife imagery can blur understanding of nature, AI-generated actors blur the line between embodied human experience and synthetic performance. Audiences may respond emotionally, but the rewards of that response accrue to corporations rather than to human artists whose work, data, or likeness may have been absorbed into training systems, often without consent.
In both cases, representation quietly risks replacing understanding.
The Case for Ethical, Transparent Use
None of this suggests that generative AI should be rejected outright. In fact, the Cool Down article itself acknowledges that AI can play a constructive role in environmental modeling, renewable energy optimization, and sustainability efforts when used carefully and transparently (Everly, 2025).
The same principle applies to creative work.
For example, I am developing an animated feature that I hope to take beyond its initial script. I do not have access to professional actors, nor could I afford them even if I did and, in this case, the project is animated by design. Using generative AI characters would allow the work to exist at all. The purpose is not misrepresentation, nor is it to displace working actors or appropriate their labor. It is a pragmatic tool for creative production where no viable alternative exists.
That distinction matters.
Ethical concerns arise not from the mere presence of AI, but from how and why it is deployed, whether it obscures provenance, exploits unconsenting sources, or quietly substitutes synthetic output for human contribution where human labor was once central and compensated.
A Short Ethics Checklist for Generative AI Use
To help draw these distinctions, the following criteria offer a practical framework for ethical evaluation:
Ethically defensible uses tend to involve:
- Clear disclosure when content is AI-generated
- No misrepresentation of reality as documentary or factual
- No appropriation of identifiable human likenesses without consent
- AI as an enabling tool where human alternatives are inaccessible
- Preservation of audience trust through transparency
Ethically problematic uses tend to involve:
- Undisclosed synthetic media presented as real
- Replacement of human labor purely for cost avoidance
- Exploitation of training data derived from unconsenting creators
- Use of AI to fabricate authority, expertise, or lived experience
- Deployment in environments with low media literacy safeguards
The Question We Can’t Avoid
Bandits, crooks, thieves, and liars share one defining trait: they are not going away. They never have. Every era develops new tools, and every era sees those tools exploited for deception and abuse. Generative AI is not a departure from this pattern. What makes this moment different is the degree. AI’s capacity to construct narratives that are extraordinarily convincing, scalable, and persistent is advancing at a pace society is only beginning to grasp.
The game itself has not changed. What has changed is the cost of believing without verifying.
This reality raises uncomfortable questions about social ethics, business ethics, and moral responsibility. It demands greater vigilance, not just from institutions and platforms, but from individuals. Truth has always required effort. In an age of synthetic certainty, that effort must increase.
I remain convinced that the power of good ultimately outweighs the power of malice. History supports this view, even if the road is never smooth. But optimism alone is insufficient. If trust is the infrastructure of a functioning society, then it must be actively maintained. The rails of justice, transparency, and accountability need reinforcement, not after harm occurs, but before it becomes normalized.
Generative AI will test our collective discernment. Whether it erodes shared reality or strengthens it will depend less on the technology itself than on our willingness to defend truth, reward integrity, and refuse the convenience of comforting falsehoods.
